Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : Anonymous
Movie : WarGames - 1983
Nitpick Category : Technological Fact
Approximate time of Nitpick : first 10-15 minutes
Summary : Wardialing with an accoustic modem (Refuted)
Detail : With an accoustic modem, the call is dialed manually on the telephone,\n and when a connection is made to the distant computer, the handset is \n placed in the cups, which have a microphone next to the earpiece, and a \n speaker next to the mouthpiece.\n \n When Matthew Broderick's charcter is 'wardialing' (calling every number\n sequentially in a telephone exchange) to try and find other computers,\n how does the accoustic coupler do the hangup, pick up and wait for dial\n tone, dial the number, and then move on to the next number?\n

Summary:

character stupidity?

Detail :

I am not an expert on early modems or what frequencies can simulate a phone hanging up or whatever, but it seems that the commenter agrees that this COULD be done, but would be very riskyn and would register as a very lengthy long distance calls.\r\rWell, David has alreadd mentioned that he is not worried about long distance calls, and clearly he is not the smartest hacker in the bunch as he so easily got caught. So it really doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that the first comment is correct.
