Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : Anonymous
Movie : Die Hard - 1988
Nitpick Category : Quotations
Approximate time of Nitpick : near the middle
Summary : German terrorists not speaking german???
Detail : When Bruce Willis is chased by the terrorists, their leader Hans remembers the bare feet of John McLane and tells the other 'Schiess den Scheiben' which should mean 'Shoot the window' in german. However, this is no correct german, it's more a word-to-word translation. He should have said 'Zerschiess die Scheiben!' or 'Schiess auf die Scheiben!'. One would expect a german terrorist to speak better german than his english :-)))

Summary:

No it's not!

Detail :

"Schiess den Fenster" or the way it's spelled right: "Schieß den Fenster", is actually wrong German. "Schiess" is in fact the imperative but "den Fenster" is completly wrong. You have to correct two things: 1.) it's necessary to use a preposition, such as "auf" or "in", which mean "on" and "in" 2.) if you use a preposition, you have to put the word in the right cause. Here it means to use the accusative plural/singular of "das Fenster" which is "die Fenster". So the correct form would be "Schiess auf die Fenster", "Schiess auf das Fenster" oder "Schiess in die Fenster".
