Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : 23511
Movie : Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The - 2001
Nitpick Category : Plot
Approximate time of Nitpick : 10-15 minutes to the end
Summary : Aragorn's rationale for waiting above the falls (Refuted)
Detail : When the fellowship lands above the falls af Rauros near the end of the movie, the plot differs from the books. That's fine, but the contrivance for delay causes a nit. In the book, they are looking for a portage around the falls, which allows time for the events that split the fellowship. In the movie, they are waiting to cross the river to continue down the other side. Aragorn's reason is that they have to wait for nightfall because of the orcs. This is all wrong. The orcs they are familiar with don't venture out into the sunlight. Daylight would be the perfect time for them to continue. He clearly knows this because when they leave Khazad-dum (Moria) he urges them on before nightfall because the orcs will swarm out after dark.

Summary:

not quite

Detail :

First of all, Gandalf has already told them about Saruman's orcs that can move under sunlight. Second of all, in Moria the orcs knew how they left and therefore where they would likely be. At the falls of Rauros, they have the advantage of the orcs not knowing exactly where they are. So with orcs hunting them that can move both during the day AND night, it would make more sense to use the cover of night to conceal any movements.
