Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : geoffmon
Movie : Ten Commandments, The - 1956
Nitpick Category : Historical Fact
Approximate time of Nitpick : 1/4 of the way through
Summary : a little early
Detail : \n In the film before the birth of Moses, an early Pharaoh decrees the slaughter of the Hebrew boys, announcing, "So says Ramses the First". The nitpick here is that the second Ramses didn't come along until about fourty years later, he should have said "so says Ramses".

Bum rap

Detail :

In the actual Biblical account, none of the Egyptian kings involved with Moses is identified by name. They are all referred to as 'Pharaoh.'

'Pharaoh' is ancient Egyptian for 'Great House' and is the equivalent of speaking of 'The White House,''Downing Street,' or 'The Kremlin' when referring to the heads of the American, British, or Russian governments.

There is no valid reason to believe that Ramses I, Seti the Great, or Ramses II had anything to do with the events depicted in the movie. In particular, Ramses II died of natural causes (we have his mummy). His eldest son, Merneptah, did not die in childhood, but reigned after him for 20 years, losing the throne in a military coup d'etat.

The only connection between Ramses I of the nitpick and the Biblical account is the mention in Exodus 1:11 of the store cities of Pi-Thoum and Raamses. The similarity between the king's name and that of one of the cities is the only reason to involve anyone from the 19th Dynasty in the story. It is rather flimsy evidence. It is equivalent to suggesting that President Grover Cleveland ordered the construction of Cleveland, Ohio.
