Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : Anonymous
Movie : Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope - 1977
Nitpick Category : Plot
Approximate time of Nitpick : 10-15 minutes to the end
Summary : What idiot designed the death star?
Detail : I don't get this. The Death Star is the size of a planet or small moon - whatever, it's big. It's expensive. It must have taken about a million people a million years to build. The design work itself must have been incredible. So when the plans fall into the hands of the rebel alliance, it takes them only a few hours to pick through this phenomonally complex design to find a 'hole' that they can drop a few bombs into and blow up the entire project. Okay, whatever, I've got no problem with this. But Darth Vader's mob must have known what they were up to. They've sent out all these X-wing fighters to stop them. If they knew what the rebels were aiming for (bearing in mind someone got close enough to 'impact the surface' of this hole) why didn't they just plug the gap? I believe the death star had only just been built as well, so there must have been some spare sheet steel knocking about the place. I mean how long would it have taken to send a couple of storm-troopers with a welding torch down there to plug this thing? A lot less time then it would take to scramble a fleet of X-wing fighters I'm sure. They also had this whacking big gun that blows up planets. Couldn't they have just shifted it down to the hole and shot up all the Y-fighters (or whatever they're called) that swung by that way? \n \n

Summary:

Flaws all around

Detail :

The superlaser, life support and propulsion systems, NEED venting. If you place grates inside the passage, there won't be venting, so why do you point that out? The shaft WAS protected otherwise the rebels could have just swooped in and dropped some bomb without losing men. They we're attacked by lots of turrets and tie fighters, so it was strategicly defended. The empire did not anticipate the fact that the rebels would attack the deathstar, thats true. It is very likely that Tarkin, himself being a Grand Moff got cocky and thought he would find the rebel base before they could launch an attack against him. As for the question of who designed the death star; there were actually quite a lot of them. Raith Sienar started basic design, Tarkin took credit for it, Bevel Lemelisk and Umak Leth continued the designing in the Maw installation. Kyle Katarn brought the existance of it to the rebelion's attention. Now any one of the designer's might have had serious moral doubts in creating a system capable of destroying whole planets and could have intentionally implimented a design flaw or weakness.
