Okay, this has been covered HOW many times? Please check for your nitpick next time you submit. I understand if it hadn't been actually put on the site yet. He didn't need someone to pull him in and out and to moniter him. He was WORKING with the bad guys. You know? The ones that have total control over the whole Matrix? CJG

The spike

The nitpick raises a perfectly legitimate question. If we add some details, it may become easier to see why the comments miss the point.

Consider the incident where Cypher meets Smith at the resaurant. Yes, indeed, he is working with the Agents who run the Matrix. However, they are not aboard the Nebuchadnezzer. Who sticks the spike into the back of Cypher's head? Even if we grant that Cypher can somehow manage to do it to himself, we have an even bigger problem: Who pulls it out? For if Cypher, while jacked into the Matrix, can manage to contol his body back on the Nebuchadnezzer and unplug himself, then it would seem that all the rebels should be able to do so. So then why must they get to a phone when being chased by Agents? They could just unplug themselves like Cypher.

Okay, it's clear that Cypher couldn't ram the spike into his own head and then pull it out. So someone else aboard the Nebuchadnezzer must have done it for him. Let's say it's Tank. Then either Tank is in on the plot with Cypher or Cypher is just using him. Since there is utterly no evidence that Tank, or anyone else, is conspiring with Cypher, to the contrary, then Cypher must have suckered Tank into doing it. Cypher asked Tank to plug him in and then, later, called and had Tank unplug him. Okay, so Tank is just doing Cypher a favor and doesn't know why Cypher is going in. Well, that raises other questions. Would Tank plug anyone in without specific authorization from Morpheus? And even if crewmembers are allowed to jack in on their own say-so, wouldn't Morpheus at least insist that a log be kept or that he be notified? One would think so. So on Cypher telling him that he felt like jumping into the Matrix to get a steak, Tank wouldn't just say "Okay" and plug him in without Morpheus knowing. And I doubt Morpheus allows beer-and-pizza runs in the first place.

This leaves us with the logic hole and plot flaw that Cypher couldn't get in and out of the Matrix on his own and there's no way he could get anyone else to assist him. Yet he manages to do it. Decent nitpick.
