Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : cheerfuldragon
Movie : Apollo 13 - 1995
Nitpick Category : Other
Nitpick Number : 14947
Approximate time of Nitpick : right at the end
Summary : Strange credits
Detail : In the closing credits, the character played by Joe Spano is listed as 'NASA Director'.\n Based on the part played by the character in the rescue (e.g., his appearance at press\n conferences), I'd say that the man was Chris Kraft, deputy director of the Manned\n Spacecraft Center. I find it odd that his name didn't appear in the credits when just\n about everybody else's did. I also find it odd that, at one point, Gene Kranz addresses\n him as 'Sir', when the two were on first name terms.

Joe Spano does play Chris Kraft. Chris is Gene's boss and mentor. Kranz is ex airforce. It would be appropriate and probably expected that officially he would call him Sir.

Yes, Gene Kranz was ex-military and yes, Chris Kraft was his mentor. However, if you read the book 'Apollo 13', which was based on actual events and conversations, there are a number of occasions where Gene calls Kraft 'Chris', not 'Sir'. Admittedly one of these is over the phone, when Chris is still at home, but habits die hard. Gene did call Kraft 'Chris' during the crisis while both are at NASA.

'Sir' is appropriate

The men may have been on first name terms, but Kraft was still Kranz's mentor and his superior, and given the time and statement, I think the use of the word 'sir' was justified.

Interesting conversation here, because I've read both Chris Kraft's book and Gene Krantz's book. Even with Krantz's military habits dying hard it was customary for everyone in Mission Control to address the others by their first name in normal conversation. At almost no point in their books does Krantz ever call Kraft 'sir', except early on when he first starts working for NASA.
