Right Kind of Lava!!!

Dante's Peak showed characteristics of an explosive violent eruption, usually caused by the silica levels in the magma being high as well as having a high water and gas content. There is no such lava as Granitic lava, as you should know Granite is a Plutonic rock and therefore only forms deep underground. The most likely type of lava coming from Dantes Peak would be Rhyolitic lava which is high in Silica and therefore has less viscosity, making it runny! This type of lava is also associated with Pyroclastic flows which feature in this film. BASALTIC lava is very viscous (thick) and is associated with "quieter" eruptions, such as Mount Kileawea in Hawaii.
Other comment is wrong.

While the nitpick as posted used the wrong names for the types of lava, the comment which corrected the nitpick on the names got the characteristics of the types wrong. To clarify: Rhyolitic or andesitic lava is very thick and tends to cause explosions because it clogs things up (e.g. west coast volcanos). Basaltic lava is very free flowing and causes more quiet eruptions (e.g. Hawaii) A volcano like Dante's Peak would tend to produce thicker, slower lava.
