The Prince of Wales in this scene is referred to as David, because that in fact was his name. The historical prince at the time was the future Edward VIII, who would later abdicate. His familial name, or the name reserved for close friends and family was, in fact David. Thus the screenwriter is demonstrating that the members of the Olympic committee, Lord Birkenhead, Lord Cadogan, and the Duke of Sutherland are actually cronies of the Prince and members of his elite social circle (of which Liddell is not).
