Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : Anonymous
Movie : Crimson Tide - 1995
Nitpick Category : Technological Fact
Nitpick Number : 26092
Approximate time of Nitpick : first 10-15 minutes
Summary : Sub cannot be the Alabama
Detail : After getting underway and prior to submerging, several shots are shown of the sub's bridge area as well as shots of the submarine itself plowing through the water. The submarine used is actually a Los Angeles/688 class attack submarine and not an Ohio class\n ballistic missile submarine. The USS Alabama (SSBN-731) is, of course, an Ohio class missile sub. The two can be differentiated by the size and placement of the fairwater planes on the sail (the sail being the large vertical structure on a submarine from which the fairwater planes extend horizontally from each side) and the shape of the topside\n deck aft of the sail. The discrepancy is repeated in the movie poster, again a Los Angeles class submarine is shown.

When the submarine is shown sailing on the surface you can clearly see the bulge of the section where the missle tubes are shown aft of the conning tower, it IS an Ohio class submarine being shown

Both are shown

Pictures of the submarine underway on the surface are most definitely those of two serarate ships - one a Los Angeles class attack sub, and the other an Ohio class missile boat.
