Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : Anonymous
Movie : Flash Gordon - 1980
Nitpick Category : Scientific Fact
Nitpick Number : 27347
Approximate time of Nitpick : right at the end
Summary : Ming still alive? (Refuted)
Detail : Near the end, when this huge ship crashes into the ongoing wedding of Ming and Dale, the ship's front spear hits Ming and passes right through his body. Based on the proportion, the spear passed through Ming's spine, but despite this we see Ming still alive and shocked, when he should have been killed instantly!

I don't recall anywhere in the movie any evidence that Ming is human, therefore his physiology could be completely different to humans. Although his outward appearance is the same, it doesn't mean he actually has a spine like humans.

It could also be that Ming's spine may have been missed, or pushed aside. He was "mostly" dead by the spearing anyway, and he escaped into his ring. Most villians get a soliliquy at the end near their demise anyway, and you can't steal that from Hollywood, Ming, OR Max VonSydow now can we?

Spinal damage does NOT kill instantly, unless it's in the very upper spine, i.e. neck. Otherwise, people with broken backs and damaged spines would all die instead of becoming papapaligec (I know I spelled that wrong). Ming's wound was in his abdomen, and while it was indeed mortal, there is no reason to believe it would have killed him instantly.
