Nitpick Description

Movie : People vs. Larry Flynt, The - 1996
Nitpick Category : Historical Fact
Nitpick Number : 29083
Approximate time of Nitpick : 2/3 of the way through
Summary : The magic bullet
Detail : Larry Flynt and his lawyer, Alan Isaacman are shot by a sniper who the film says “was never brought to justice.” In reality the lawyer who was shot was named Gene Reeves who was defending Flynt in an obscenity case. Isaacman didn’t meet Flynt untill after the assassination attempt. Isaacman in the movie appears to be a composite of at least three lawyers. Joseph Paul Franklin has confessed to the shooting as well as to numerous killings. Both Reeves and Isaacman have accepted this as the probable truth although Flynt is holding out for a more interesting conspiracy theory, a few of which are mentioned in the movie. According to Reeves, the reason Franklin wasn’t brought to trial for the shooting is because he and Flynt didn’t press the case for security reasons and because Franklin is already serving six life sentences.
