Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : Eliott Ness
Movie : Aliens - 1986
Nitpick Category : Other
Nitpick Number : 43067
Approximate time of Nitpick : 1/4 of the way through
Summary : Nice patches.
Detail : Why are the Colonial Marines wearing U.S. Army yellow rank chevrons on their battle dress uniforms? Considering the amount of competition between the U.S. military branches and the fact that current U.S. military does not wear sleeve rank patches, it is unlikely that this would occur in the future.

You are right that the marines (at least apone) are wearing Army yellow class A dress rank on their bdus. However the Air Force still uses sleeve rank for enlised people.

Unlikely but not impossible. The Marines could have absorbed the Army or any number of reasons in the future, thus this is not a nit.

The Marines could never absorb the Army, as they are a smaller military force with a differing mission. The point of the nitpick is why would the Marines in the future be wearing colored Army rank chevrons on their battle dress uniforms when colored rank patches and rank patches have been removed the Army's and Marine's battle dress uniforms in the present day. The military branches removed the patches for tactically valid reasons, such as the fact that the color gave away a soldier's position to the enemy. The militay isn't going to revert back to a methodology that is unsound and puts their personnel at risk, thus the nitpick is valid. Additionally, your mere assertion of "any number of reasons" is too overly broad and vague to refute the nitpick. "Any number of reasons" could refute just about every nitpick on this site.

And you are assuming the command, structure and uniforms of a fictional branch of the military. Since the Colonial Marines doesn't exist, they could have adopted any uniform type they wanted to.

According to the FAQ for this site, nitpicks are not proper patches on police or military uniforms. Therefore, this is not a nitpick by definition. Additionally, just because the U.S. military does not wear sleeve rank patches today does not mean that they won't adopt them in the future.

While the original poster is correct, this film takes place sometime in the 22nd Century and the United States COLONIAL Marines do not exist today.
