Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : selfdo
Movie : Beneath the Planet of the Apes - 1970
Nitpick Category : Weaponry
Nitpick Number : 45688
Approximate time of Nitpick : 10-15 minutes to the end
Summary : Apes used SMGs?
Detail : \n Though you don't see them during the scenes when the Ape (re: Gorilla) army is marching out of Ape City or in the Forbidden Zone, as the Apes complete their conquest of the underground of the former New York City they are using sub-machine guns. This seems utterly fantastic as SMGs typically require extensive manufacturing processes, including precision machining, which the Apes apparently don't have. For all their knowledge in biology and psychology, the Apes aren't very advanced technologically, being at best equivalent to early 19th-century human levels. It seems inconsistent for Apes to have developed firearms to an early 20th century level w/o having many things that were common well beforehand; that is, steam power, use of fossil fuels, extensive iron and steel production, and electricity.\n \n DLS\n

Submachineguns are some of the easiest and cheapest weapons to manufacture. When the British lost the bulk of their supplies at Dunkirk they needed a weapon they could get into the hands of their troops quickly. They came up with the Sten. The Soviets depended on the PPsH-41 because they required less manufacturing time and effort than the standard service rifle. SMGs are typically stamped rather than machined and usually do not require the wooden furniture traditionally found on rifles. The rifles the apes used in the original Planet of the Apes would be more difficult and time-consuming to craft than a submachinegun.

The guns in the first film were used during the course of a hunt. Maybe the rifles were for hunting and the SMGs for war. Pistols are used in BPOTA, but not in POTA as well.
