Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : Mama Puddle
Movie : Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - 2001
Nitpick Category : Plot
Nitpick Number : 48231
Approximate time of Nitpick : near the middle
Summary : gee, what could it be?
Detail : \n The owl brings the Nimbus 2000 to Harry in the Great Hall, and after opening it Harry and the others seem genuinely surprised that it is a broomstick. Wouldn't people who are so accustommed to that kind of thing easily recognize it for what it is?

They may have been surprised by the fact that Harry got a broomstick because First Years are not allowed to have them. That, and the fact that Harry has no one who could have sent him such a thing.

True, in the book it was established that they were not allowed to have broomsticks in the first year, but this was never said in the movie. Your comment is a book/film descrepancy, not one based on the movie alone. And, though I'll admit that Harry wouldn't have known who would send him a broomstick, he would have been able to recognize the shape, but he and the others don't seem to (said: *It's a broomstick!* as if it could be anything else :) If the intent was to show surprise, then maybe it should have been brought in a box instead of wrapped so that its shape was a dead-giveaway. Good points, though!

The Nimbus 2000 is the newest broom out. It is the best at that time. That is why it is so cool to everyone. Also, Harry never had a broom, so he has a right to be suprised.

Comment 31961 said it all.

Comment 37749, New Broom, has missed the point. Harry is surprised that what is obviously is a broom, in fact is a broom. It is only after this that Ron goes on about it being a Nimbus 2000.

Harrys is surprised on several levels

Everyone else in the room may be surprised mainly by the fact that it is a Nimbus 2000, but consider Harry's situation - whether or not he is aware of the significance of a Nimbus 2000, he is surprised that ANYONE sent him ANYTHING. After all, who would have sent it? The Dursleys? Hardly. He doesn't at this point know the Weasleys very well, so he wouldn't have thought it was from them. He has no inkling about Sirus, who doesn't appear for several more books. So Harry, who thought he was alone in the world, wasn't expecting anything in the mail at all. And perhaps that's even part of the general wonder in the Great Hall - everyone knows about Harry because he is a legend in the wizard world. The fact that he is reciving a gift at all is interesting and other students may be aware that he is alone in the world - they certainly know he is an orphan - and THEY might be as surprised as Harry to see a gift plop into his lap unexpectedly over breakfast.
