Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : 33838
Movie : Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The - 2002
Nitpick Category : Other
Nitpick Number : 50186
Approximate time of Nitpick : Throughout the movie
Summary : Aragorn's Horse (Refuted)
Detail : \n When Eomer is giving Aragorn and Legolas their horses, he refers to the horses as Hasufel and Arod. When Aragorn is roused by his horse after the battle with the Wargs, and another time in the film, he refers to the horse as Brego. Also, in the visual guide, the horse is refered to as Brego. I really hope someone can explain this or it will be cleared up in the Extended Edition, because otherwise this was a fantastic movie. Not a great adaptation, but a fantastic movie.

Explanation of Brego

There’s a crucial part in understanding this that has been cut in the 3hr movie. Éomer gave the two horses, Hasufel and Arod, to Aragorn and co. However, when Aragorn and co. arrive at the Golden Hall of Medusled, Aragorn helps to oversee the departure of the last of the horses when the people evacuate and flee to Helm’s Deep. Brego is the horse of the dead prince, Théodred, and the horse is too distressed to carry another rider. In fact it’s even heard 'Turn this fellow free. He has seen enough of war.' (In the extended DVD.) So Brego is freed into the wild. It is this horse, Brego, that then rescues Aragorn. I hope this clarifies everything.

Hasufel was a chestnut (reddish brown) and Brego was a bay (reddish brown with a black mane) Brego was horse of a rider of Rohan. Hasufel must have been killed in the scuffle with the Wargs, because from then on, he doesn't appear again.

But the horse that rescues Aragorn is indeed referred to as Brego, but look at its nose: it has a small white "star" on it....did Hasufel have the "star" as well? If not, then perhaps he just switched horses at Edoras - it wasn't explained in the movie, which was bad planning, but it's feasible. :)

When Aragorn is given the horse hasufel or arod(one of the two) he goes, with legolas and gimli to the woods of famgorn. After that they go to edoras with gandalf. The scenes where he refers to his horse as Brego are after he left edoras. I suppose he got himself a different horse there.

if you look you will see that Brego, the horse that rouses Aragorn, is not wearing a saddle and has a rope instead of proper harness whereas the horse Arod had a proper harness and saddle, they are not the same horse

I would like to clear this up once and for all. This is probably clear to many people as is was stated in the first refute of this nitpick, but at any rate it's driving me crazy and I want it to be clear. Hasufal and Arod (not sure about the spelling) are given to the three (Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli) by the Rhoheran Riders. However, in the extended DVD you will see that the handlers at Rhohan (when they are evacuating) are having trouble with a particular horse, who turns out to be Brego. Aragorn speaks elvish to him, and tells Eowyn to set him free. This was stated in the first nitpick, but evidently some people didn't grasp that. When Aragorn falls over the cliff and has his little brush with death, (which I bitterly add, did not occur in the book) he is rescued by Brego. Presumably, this is because Aragorn had done him a good turn, and he was returning the favor.

when Aragorn and others arrived at rohan, he changed his horse in the book, because it says in the visual guide that only aragorn could tame brego, and so theoden wouldnt have wanted to waste a good horse in battle so he would have let Aragorn have Brego :)
