Detail : \n When Wayne Collins (Greg Kinnear) attacks Annie' Wilson (Cate Blanchett) at the docks, he tries to hit Annie with a flashlight. Cut to a close up of Buddy Cole (Giovanni Ribisi) grabbing Wayne's hand to stop him from hitting her. Buddy then punches Wayne but this time the flashlight is now with Buddy instead of Wayne.

When Wayne Collins is about to hit Annie with the flashlight (for the second time),Buddy Cole stop's him not only by grabbing his wrist, but also by taking the flashlight and then hitting him with it - not punching him.
