Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : 24599
Movie : From Hell - 2001
Nitpick Category : Historical Fact
Nitpick Number : 53875
Approximate time of Nitpick : 1/3 of the way through
Summary : Dodgy doggie
Detail : \n Depp's dog, seen when he returns to his lodgings, is apparently a French Bulldog (it has the distinctive pricked-up ears and markings). This breed of dog would not be found in 1888 Britain. Although breeding began in France in the 1860's by crossing imported English bulldogs with French terriers, it only really developed at the turn of the century, and then mostly centred in the Paris area. It didn't cross the channel back to Britain until well into the 1900's.

Maybe an anachronism, but possibly the dog's breed is significant. French Bulldogs were originally fashionable among the working classes - Depp's character, unusually for someone his position, is working class. They were also commonly kept by butchers and coachmen for some reason, both occupations that feature heavily in the film.
