Submitted by Nitpicker : 9teufel
Movie : Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - 1968
Nitpick Category : Quotations
Nitpick Number : 71937
Approximate time of Nitpick : near the middle
Summary : They don't know that they are in Vulgaria? (Refuted)
Detail : When they land with Chitty they say they don't know where they are and aslo ask the guy with the donkey in three languages. They should have known that they are in Vulgaria because when they were still airborne they saw the Baron and also mentioned him. If they mentioned him they must know of him and also where he reins. Therefore they must have known where they are.

Where in Vulgaria?

I think it's more a question of where in Vulgaria they are and which way they need to go to get to the castle. The car landed in the countryside near a village, and the castle can be seen in the distance. Just because Caractacus knows who the Baron is doesn't mean they'd necessarily know Vulgarian geography or road directions. It's not the sharpest screenwriting, but I don't think it's really a mistake. As for the man with the donkey, it seems that Vulgaria uses at least two languages, because the villagers talk to the newcomers in both German and English. When the man doesn't answer the first time, they assume it's because he doesn't understand, and they ask in another language.

1. They just flew over the castle so they know the general direction.

\r2. From where they parked Chitty, look at the background and behold, the castle. So they do know exactly where the castle is. Therefore no reason to ack for directions.

\r3. Of course they use two languages in Vulgaria (for the movie). Should the entire part of the movie have been done in German and subtitles used? Don't forget the audience are mainly children. With subtitles the audience would have quickly lost interest in the movie. German is used in about 3 sencences or so to give the audience the feeling of a foreign country. So you would make every film use the native language whenever they are in a foreign country? That would make many films very unpopular in the states.

\r4. Even if they used two languages in Vulgaira, why did Caractacus try French? He knew enough about Vulgaria to know the baron so he should know enough about the language. Most people in Europe know what languages are spoken in neighboring countries.
