Rogers tells his men and all assembled in Portsmouth - including many British officers - that they are marching to Detroit, and from there to Oregon. (Rogers is generally credited for naming 'Oregon'.) However, at the time his orders were to go only to go as far as Michilimackinac in today's Michigan. Once he got there he schemed to head further west, and was ultimately tried - but acquitted - for his ambitions that beyond the Crown's. So there is no way that he would make a general pronouncement before heading off that he intended to act contrary to his orders. |
