Nitpick Description

Submitted by Nitpicker : 46324
Movie : Kingdom of Heaven - 2005
Nitpick Category : Historical Fact
Nitpick Number : 76565
Approximate time of Nitpick : Throughout the movie
Summary : Master of the Templars
Detail : In the movie, Raynald of Chatillon is shown to be at the head of the Knights Templars in the Middle East. The historical Raynald was indeed lord of Krak, but he was not a Templar. Gerard de Ridefort was Grand Master of the Templar order. Historically he fought at the Battle of Hattin (portrayed in the film) and he was captured. The Templars who were captured by Saladin were executed, but Gerard was set free on the condition that he would surrender Gaza to Saladin.

Reynald of Chatillons was such a disreputable character that he would have been drummed out of the Templars and excommunicated if he had joined. Templars were forbidden to come into contact with women unless necessary -- Reynald married two women for their lands (his second wife came with the wonderful door-prize of Kerak, by the way...) and was known as a freebooter and all-around cad -- in fact his most famous exploit was "kidnapping" what was believed by Muslims to be the body of the prophet Mohammed from Medina and holding it for ransom. That gained him the undying emnity of Saladin and led directly to his execution by Saladin after being captured at, IIRC, Hattin.

The movie does not claim to have any historical accuracy, and to quote the rules, "Trivia, no matter how interesting, is not a Nitpick." This is historical trivia and not a nitpick.\r\r
