Details : When all the people are about to board the bus to cross the bridge, the soda jerk says "I'll take all of your checks now." I guess he did not read the sign behind him saying "No checks cashed"!

Details :

 In many areas of the country, even today, if you eat in a diner or restaurant your bill for services rendered is referred to as a check. So the counter attendant was collecting their check slips, not their payment.

What do you (and most others) say when you finish a meal in a restaurant? Recall the oft-used phrase, "Waiter, check please." Don't tell me you are asking a waiter to pay you!
